Window Treatments

When we consider window treatments there are many, many possibilities to choose from. The main thing besides the actual width and height of the window in relation to the room is the décor. Is the window going to be the visual focal point of the room? Or is it going to blend with the décor and be non- obtrusive.

Of course when approaching a window treatment we keep the style we are going for in mind. Are you going to start off with blinds or shades? When choosing blinds or shades for your window treatment, you have to consider the element of light and privacy. Do you want to fill the room with light or keep it relatively dark? Today you can get fabric shades to match the décor and the fabric of the room with light and privacy control capabilities. If your window is wider than high you may want to go with vertical blinds as opposed to horizontal or Venetian Blinds. You can get Vertical blinds in UV light controlled fabric as well.

Another thing if you live in a house is to consider the houses architecture as well. How does the window treatments look from the outside of the house looking in? For a historic designed house a more traditional or Victorian window treatment may look better than vertical blinds. Lace Swags or Valances may compliment a Fabric Shade instead. If you have a cabin or oriental style house, wood woven shades or bamboo blinds might do the trick for you.

Once you choose your shade or blinds you may want Curtains or Drapes to go with them. In the old days drapes were used primarily as an insulation or privacy control much as shades and blinds today. Today they can serve the same purpose with drapes and curtains but you have more choices than in the past. If you have shades and blinds that handle your light and privacy issues than you can go for purely decorative curtains and drapes in your window treatments. There are even decorative rods to compliment the style of drapes, curtains, valances and swags that you may choose to use. You need to keep in mind color and texture of the fabric when decorating your windows. Drapes are pleated panels that go to the floor and curtains are shorter. 3 basic styles of curtains are café, tiered and panels. Both drapes and curtains can be lined or unlined, adding to your privacy and light control.

When doing your bathroom and kitchen window treatments, you can use vinyl mini blinds. They come in many colors to choose from. You can choose from Venetian or Vertical styles. Also Vinyl roller shades are good too. In these two rooms you want to use something that can withstand humidity. You can use café curtains in your kitchen as well, and now days they sell bathroom sets that include curtains in material that is humidity resistant.

Again as with all the window treatments you have to choose from, it is what suits your style and price range. Go for what brings out your personality as well. You can be as creative as you want with your window treatments. If you are not sure about how to do your windows then you can buy self-help or a do it your self book, buy magazines that give window treatment ideas. Finally if you really don’t think you can handle it hire a professional. But the last option can be really expensive.
