How Are Vertical Blinds Used?

Vertical Blinds

We are all familiar with Venetian or Horizontal Blinds. Venetian Blinds or horizontal blinds; are believed to be introduced into society in Venice Italy at around 1770.

Vertical Blinds are called “vertical” because the slats are lined in an upright position from top to bottom as opposed to side to side across the width of a window like horizontal blinds. Just like horizontal blinds Vertical Blinds are also made with slats, but in this case they hang vertically from a track as opposed to horizontally. They also rotate to let light either in or out depending on your preference at the time. They can also fold up on one side of the window or door to which they are attached. Vertical Blinds do well on windows that are wide as opposed to tall. They are an excellent look for wide windows as opposed to high window. Today Vertical Blinds come in many materials. You can get them in aluminum, vinyl, wood, or fabrics. They come finishes and textures to accommodate any style room. Some Vertical Blinds offer the look of drapery. These kind look particularly well on glass sliding doors.

However, Vertical Blinds can be made to specification, for any window or door. They are made from all of the materials that conventional blinds are made from and even fabric if desired.

They are operated by rotating the vanes (or slats) or pulled by a cord or safety wands. Safety wands are the preferred over the traditional cords by most customers The wand is rotated either clockwise or counter clockwise to open or close the Vertical blinds. Today there are even electrically controlled vertical blinds that open and close with a remote. This type is good when there are safety issues concerning small children and pets that could get tangled in the cords or get their heads caught in the slats resulting strangling or choking.

Aside from the many materials to choose from Vertical Blinds also come in many colors. Some are even embossed with patterns.

Aluminum vertical blinds are very cost effective. They are good to use in Living Rooms, Bed Rooms or Dens; you name it. Vinyl vertical blinds are good to use in areas where there is high humidity such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Wooden Vertical Blinds look great in a room with wooden furniture. They do not hold up well in humid conditions. Make sure the room you use them in is room with low humidity where the environment is more controlled. Wooden Vertical Blinds can be very expensive so a lot of people go with the faux wood ones.

Vertical Blinds made of fabric can also be costly. They are made by using inserts to provide shape and stability. The inserts also make the rotation of the slats easy.

Vertical Blinds come in a vast assortment of thicknesses as well. Usually the more they block out the more expensive they are. Some Vertical Blinds are very wide and require fewer slats to cover a window, others are very narrow and require a lot of slats.

Vertical Blinds are easier to clean than horizontal. They don’t collect dust the same way. They can be vacuumed, dusted or wiped with a damp cloth; the same as horizontal blinds.

Vertical blinds go well with other window treatments such as drapes and valances or look fine alone. The choice is yours depending on your style preferences.
